Note: Form 2290 deadlines for the 2026–2027 tax period are shifted when the standard deadline falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday. In those cases, the filing and HVUT payment deadline moves to the next business day. (Taxpayers affected by certain disasters may qualify for IRS relief that postpones applicable filing and payment deadlines.)

Important: An extension to file Form 2290 does not automatically give you additional time to pay the tax. The IRS treats the filing and payment extensions separately.

FIRST-USE MONTH RULES

Which Form 2290 Deadline Applies to Your Vehicle?

The deadline depends on when the vehicle is first used on public highways. The situations below can help understand when Form 2290 is due.

Vehicles Used on Public Highways in July

A taxable vehicle used on public highways in July 2026 generally has an August 31, 2026 Form 2290 deadline. The same deadline applies to vehicles that were already on the road and remain in use when the new July 2026–June 2027 tax period begins.

Note: The Form 2290 tax period begins July 1, 2026, and ends June 30, 2027.

Vehicles First Used After July

When a taxable vehicle is first used on public highways after July, the filing deadline generally falls on the last day of the following month, and the tax is generally prorated based on the month of first use (special tax-computation rules apply to certain privately purchased used vehicles).

Low-Mileage and Agricultural Vehicles

A vehicle can qualify for suspension of HVUT when it is expected to travel 5,000 miles or less on public highways during the tax period. For a qualifying agricultural vehicle, the limit is 7,500 miles. Even when no HVUT is payable because the vehicle qualifies for suspension, you still need to file Form 2290 and report the vehicle appropriately.

Note: The federal filing date is based on first use, not your state’s registration-renewal date.

OVERDUE FILING

Missed the Form 2290 Deadline?

Missing the Form 2290 deadline does not mean you should wait until the next filing period. The correct response is to file the overdue return and pay any tax due. Here’s what to check:

  1. Confirm Your Filing Details

Check the tax period, first-use month, and the details of your vehicle, including VIN, EIN, taxable gross weight, and the status of the vehicle (taxable or suspended).

  2. Submit Your Overdue Return

File Form 2290 for the period in which the vehicle was first used.

  3. Pay Outstanding HVUT

Pay any outstanding HVUT using an available IRS payment method. Keep your filing confirmation, payment records, and IRS-stamped or watermarked Schedule 1 with your business records.

Note: The IRS may assess penalties for late filing or late payment, and interest may accrue on unpaid tax. If you believe you had reasonable cause for filing or paying Form 2290 tax late, you can request penalty relief by explaining the circumstances to the IRS.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions About the 2290 Due Date

When is Form 2290 due for the 2026–2027 tax period?

The due date for Form 2290 is August 31, 2026 for a vehicle that was on the road in service in July 2026. For vehicles first used in later months, the deadline is generally the last day of the following month, subject to weekend and legal-holiday adjustments.

Is Form 2290 always due on August 31?

No. August 31 generally applies to vehicles first used on public highways in July, including vehicles that were already on the road when the new July–June tax period began. For vehicles first used later in the tax period, the deadline is based on the month of first use.

When is Form 2290 due for a truck first used in August 2026?

The Form 2290 for a truck first used on public highways in August 2026 is due by September 30, 2026.

When is Form 2290 due for a truck first used in September 2026?

For a truck first used in September 2026, the Form 2290 filing and payment deadline is November 2, 2026, because October 31 falls on a Saturday.

Does buying a used truck change the filing deadline?

Not generally. The IRS states that the Form 2290 due date does not change for a privately purchased used vehicle, although special rules can affect how the tax is calculated.

Do I need to file Form 2290 if no HVUT is due?

Yes, in some cases. A vehicle may qualify for suspension from HVUT when its expected highway use stays within the mileage limit—generally 5,000 miles for most vehicles or 7,500 miles for agricultural vehicles. Even though no tax is due, the vehicle must still be reported on Form 2290 as suspended.

Can I make a request for an extension to file Form 2290?

Yes. You can make a request for an extension in writing before the return is due, and you must explain the reason for the delay. The IRS states that an extension to file does not extend the time to pay the tax. A payment extension must be requested separately.

Can I file Form 2290 after the deadline?

Yes. You can still file Form 2290 after the due date. File the return and pay any HVUT due as soon as possible, since late filing or late payment may lead to penalties and interest.
