  • You are required to file a HVUT (Heavy Vehicle Utility Tax) Form 2290 if your highway motor vehicle has a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more. Of course, there are always exceptions. If your vehicle is operated by the American National Red Cross, for example, you’re tax exempt. For the full list, see page 2 of the IRS Form 2290 instructions.
  • Form 2290 must be filed by the last day of the month following the month of first use. If you’ve recently purchased a truck, the IRS allows you the remaining days in the month of purchase plus a month extra to file. You’ll file and pay for the partial pay period, which ends June 30, 2019, then you’ll begin filing on a regular yearly schedule, from July 1st to June 30th of the next year.

    When do you need to file a 2290 amendment?
    • It’s easy to mess up one of the characters on your 2290 return. Correct it now with an amended form and get a new Schedule 1 with the updated VIN listed.

    • If the gross weight of your vehicle is more than what you reported last year, you’ll need to file an amended return. We’ll help you calculate the additional tax you owe, and you’ll be on your way!

    • If you reported your vehicle as suspended, but then exceed the suspended mileage amount, you’ll be required to pay the tax. Suspended mileage is less than 5,000 for a truck, or less than 7,500 for an agricultural vehicle.

    Form 8849 Credit Request-
    If a vehicle you previously filed for, and paid taxes on, has been sold, destroyed, or stolen, you can claim an 8849 credit request. Here are a few situations where you may be able to file a claim for a refund:
  • If your vehicle was sold or traded.
  • If your vehicle has been stolen.
  • If your vehicle was destroyed, either by wreck or other circumstance.
  • If you filed for the same vehicle twice, or filed a VIN by mistake.
  • If the vehicle does not end up being driven above the 5,000-mile threshold (7,500 miles for agricultural vehicles) during the tax period.
